In Aotearoa, many older women live in houses once full of life, now echoing with solitude. Years of care and closeness give way to quiet isolation and a loss of independence. ‘Rooms that Listen’ explores how homes shaped by colonial ideals of the nuclear family can isolate people. By rethinking and reorienting domestic space, the project speculates how two elderly women might cohabit. Framed through memories, intimacies, and needs, it considers how architecture can respond to the emotional, social, and physical dimensions of care.
